Michael William Hughes, of Vero Beach, FL, passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 1, 2024, at the age of 58. Michael (Mike) was born on April 7, 1966 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He grew up in Greenwich, CT, and graduated from Greenwich High School and Johnson State College in VT.
Mike had an exciting and fulfilling career in the hospitality industry. Highlights include working as a Beverage Manager at The Plaza Hotel in New York City; a manager at Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island; and 20 years as Senior Director of CityWalk at Universal Orlando. Mike approached his career as he did everything in life—with passion and enthusiasm, and it earned him great success. He was well-known and respected in the industry, and a mentor to many.
Mike lived life to the fullest. He loved golf, music, travel, and he especially enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He was a loving and devoted son, brother, and brother-in-law–and the coolest uncle to his three nephews, all of whom loved him dearly. His circle of friends was vast and large, yet tight-knit and loyal, and he took great pride in his friendships. In true Mike style, he rolled out the red carpet wherever he went, always raising the fun level to new heights, and making sure everyone around him was happy and taken care of. We will always remember Mike for his kindness and generosity, humor and wit (especially his endearing nicknames and famous one liners), and great energy.
Michael is survived by his mother, Elizabeth White Hughes; his sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Matthew O’Connor; nephews Matthew, Kyle, and Dylan O’Connor; a maternal aunt, Kathleen White; maternal uncle, William J. White; and many cousins. His father, Michael Edward Hughes preceded him.
In lieu of donations or flowers, the family requests that you honor Mike by sharing good times with family and friends—and keeping his memory alive.

I’m at a loss for words as I try to process the fact that Mike is gone. We met at a pivotal moment in our lives, both of us stepping out into the world for the first time at Johnson State College. What started as a shared experience quickly grew into a bond that would last over 40 years. Mike wasn’t just a friend; he was family.
Together, we navigated the ups and downs of life, sharing moments of joy, struggles, and everything in between. Our memories are too many to count, but the ones that stand out are the times we had coming of age together. We were there for each other’s weddings, and our friendship outlasted even our marriages.
It’s hard to imagine a world without Mike. We texted weekly, debating everything from politics to UFC, and always talked about the next adventure we’d take together. Now, those plans will never come to be.
Mike left us way too soon. The world is a little less bright without him in it. But I will always carry the memories of our friendship close to my heart. Rest in peace, my brother. You’ll be missed more than words can say.
