With a heart full of love and a spirit at peace, Lawrence John Cherry of Sebastian, FL, passed “farther away from the world we know, and into the mystic.” He died on February 16 in Vero Beach, FL, at the age of 65, following a long illness.
Larry was a man who made an unforgettable impression the moment he entered a room, not just because of his towering, 6-foot-7-inch frame, but because of his magnetic personality, generous spirit, and natural charm.
A devoted family man, Larry took great pride in his role as a husband and father. He always lit up when speaking about his two sons, who were the center of his world.
By trade, Larry was a skilled carpenter, crafting everything from custom homes to heirloom-quality rocking horses. His home in Sebastian and his previous home in Princeton, NJ, were masterpieces he built for his family—testaments to his talent, love for detail, and the pride he took in his work. Within his bespoke kitchen, Larry was an amazing chef. He delighted his family with delicious meals made from scratch, believing in starting fresh with each lovingly-planned meal rather than ever using leftovers.
Born in June 1959 to Helen Ragany Cherry and Lawrence W. Cherry Jr., Larry grew up in Franklin Park, NJ. He graduated from St. Pius X High School in Piscataway in 1977. Larry’s early career was spent as a contractor and a business manager for PSE&G. In the early 2000s, he relocated with his young family to Florida, embracing the warmth of the Sunshine State. He and his wife enjoyed the beaches of the Treasure Coast, Orlando’s theme parks, and the spectacular sunsets along the Gulf.
As a man of great wisdom and intellect, literature was a lifelong companion. Yet nothing soothed his soul more than listening to music, especially live rock bands. Drawing from one of his favorite songs, it is apt to say: Like every rose, Larry’s life had its thorns. His strength and grace in the face of unfathomable challenges were unmatched. His love and kindness will always be remembered in a lasting legacy of warmth and compassion.
Larry leaves behind cherished memories with those who loved him most. He is survived by his best friend and wife of more than 40 years, Jill; his sons, Brian and Beau of Sebastian; two sisters and two brothers, along with their spouses; eight nieces and nephews; one great-niece; aunts; and dozens of cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Larry’s life will be celebrated at a private memorial service.

Jill,
my deepest sympathy to you and the family. As you know, Larry became one of my earliest friends in St A’s and was part of an inseparable foursome in high school.
It was great to see him again after many years in Clearwater.
I’m sure Larry’s making lots of new friends in heaven.
We all loved him.

To Jill, Brian, Beau and the entire Cherry Family,
Mary and I offer our most sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing Larr. We have been praying for him for quite some time hoping that his health would improve. May he rest in peace and and be welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven where I hope to catch up with him someday. We lost a husband, father and to me a true brother like no other. I have so many memories of hanging out with him and living my best life. We were roommates and we painted a lot of houses together 😉 Tall guys have an easier time doing ceilings!! I spent many nights shooting pool and listening to great tunes in the basement of the Garden Ave family house. I remember pulling the transmission out of the Roadrunner at the shop at Brown & Glynn both of us covered in transmission fluid. Building the house in Princeton. I could go on and on … The Cherry Family is my second family and at times, they were my only family. One day, I will meet back up with Larr and all those who have gone before us. Of course, Mrs Cherry (Helen) will ask me which mass I went to this past weekend.
