Ishbel Macleod Fischer

February 17, 1930 ~ January 15, 2021

Ishbel Macleod Fischer, 90, of Williamsburg, VA died peacefully on January 15, 2021 at her son’s home in Indian River Shores, FL.

Ishbel was born February 17, 1930 on the island of Stornoway, Scotland.  She developed into a brave young woman who left that small island in Scotland during the post-war years and moved to London, then Morocco and, ultimately, Washington, D.C. It was there that Ishbel met the love of her life, Ed Fischer, at Sunday coffee at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lafayette, Square.

Ed and Ishbel married in 1963 in Washington D.C. and moved to Williamsburg, VA in 1975.  They were both faithful members of Bruton Parish Church for decades. After Ed Fischer passed away in 1985, Ishbel evolved into an independent woman – caring, compassionate and generous – living life on her own terms.  She frequently volunteered at the Bruton Parish Church Gift Shop and at the Williamsburg Hospital Gift Shop.  She loved long walks along the ocean, and she vacationed both spring and fall in Duck, NC.  Ishbel was anchored by her close friendship with her neighbors and best friends: Woody and Doris Woolwine. The three of them were inseparable for 25 years; a lit walkway connected their back yards and their doors were always open to each other.

Ishbel is predeceased by her husband Edwin Rees Fischer; brother Kenneth Donald Macleod, brother George Macleod, and sister Marion Macleod.  She is survived by her brother William John Macleod of Stornoway, age 97; her sons Rees Macleod Fischer of Phoenix, AZ and Morgan MacLeod Fischer of Indian River Shores, FL; and four grandchildren, Sophie, Harrison, Coco and Mairi.

Ishbel’s ashes will be interred in the Bruton Parish Churchyard.  A service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday April 12, 2021 at Bruton Parish Church, with the Rev. Christopher Epperson officiating.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Treasure Coast Food Bank: https://treasurecoastfoodbank.salsalabs.org/givetribute/index.html

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
