In 1973, Gary Frye was a groomsman in my wedding, a close friend of mine and my family. My maternal grandmother thought of him as her other grandson. They became fast friends.
Gary was known in Pittsburgh as “the barber to the CEOs.” Everyone in power knew Gary, and Gary knew everyone in power.
He was so much more than a barber, as one might conclude. He was a thinking partner, sounding board, confidant, and counselor. He earned and sustained our trust.
From his original shop in the Jenkins Arcade to the custom-designed shop built in then new Pittsburgh National Bank Tower, Gary held court for years. CEOs used him as a messenger between and among themselves. He could be trusted.
He was also a seasonal fixture in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, where his family had a summer place. He knew the lay of the land in the Laurel Highlands.
Greatly it saddens me to learn of his death, yet I am certain of his landing among the angels. May God’s love, peace, and grace attend Gary’s deserving soul.
To his family and friends, my fervent prayers and heartfelt condolences.

Karen and all, it was with the utmost sadness that I learned of Gary’s passing. We spent so many happy hours together riding our horses. He was a really good, honest and gentle soul. His death has left a huge hole in my life, even though we have been in different states for a long time. You have my deepest sympathy, Thelma and Don Bertonaschi
