Douglas Garretson Sloan, III

February 10, 1953 ~ November 27, 2021

Douglas Garretson Sloan, III “Gary” 68, passed away November 27, 2021 at the VNA Hospice House. Gary was born February 10, 1953 in Orange, New Jersey to Douglas Garretson Sloan, Jr. and Joan Ann Scott.
Gary was the owner of Sloan Pools and was a swimming pool contractor for 43 years. It’s been said that if you do a job you love you will never work a day in your life. Gary loved his job and he loved his customers. He started the company in South Florida servicing Ft. Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach and Boca Raton. He moved the business north to Vero Beach in 2006. The Vero Beach area was where Gary always wanted to live after visiting for many years to surf and spend time with friends.
Gary was a devout Christian. His faith was extremely important to him. He led by example and wanted to foster faith in others. He loved working with the youth group at Grace Church in Deerfield Beach. Later he went on to help build a playground at Highlands Christian Academy (HCA) in memory of his daughter, Amy. Many of his lifelong friendships were established through Grace Church and HCA.
His hobbies involved anything on the water. Especially boating and fishing with his family, friends and his two pups, Daisy and Maddie. One could usually find him on the waters of the Treasure Coast and South Florida all the way down to the Florida Keys. He enjoyed many early morning fishing trips to Blue Cypress and Lake Garcia, as well as memorable fishing adventures in the Bahamas and Costa Rica.
Gary had interests off the water too. He played weekly golf games. Never content, Gary was always trying to improve his game. He enjoyed playing in charity tournaments for Highlands Christian Academy and Youth For Christ. He bought a 1953 Chevy pickup truck, lovingly referred to as “Buffus” and with the help of friends turned it into his dream machine. He drove it everywhere, and when asked what year it was he would reply “1953! Just like me!” When Gary fell ill he decided to give Buffus to his son, Nich to keep the truck in the family.
Gary was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Lynn Sloan; father, Douglas Garretson Sloan Jr; mother, Joan Ann Sloan Staton Beaudoin and brother, Mark Staton.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Pamela Griffin Sloan; son, Nicholas Garretson Sloan; brothers, Scott Stanton (Renae) and Chris Stanton; sister, Cindy Powers; many nieces and nephews and great friends.
A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held at a later date.

Gary you are my Big Brother , growing up you shared your love of music, playing the flute to Jethro Tull, I would come running in your room to sit and listen. Surfing was a great love of yours, I remember Grandpa Scott, bought you your first “ole mail cart”, to carry your longboard over to Deerfield Beach to surf.
I love you ❤️
Pam & Nich , you are his world , may he continue to watch over you

  • The service from Millennium was outstanding. Rachel was sweet, personable and very comforting. It was important to me that my dad was kept locally where I knew where he would be. Very nice facility, state of the art and quality of my fathers remains were so refined compared to my mothers years ago. I highly recommend this place for an affordable choice for your loved one. Thank you for making an already stressful event easy. With high regards, the Esposito and Keith Family.

  • Millennium Cremation provided a fantastic service to our family at a difficult time. Our beloved mother passed away in Vero Beach and the rest of the family was in other parts of the country. Due to the Covid health crisis, none of us could get to Vero Beach in person. That's where Millennium took over. They helped us manage everything, coordinated with a cemetery in Maine, managed the obituaries, expedited all the paperwork, and even delivered an important document locally that saved us days. Funeral director Rachel was a godsend, and she made it clear what she was going to do, and what we needed to do. If you know what you want, Millennium is highly recommended, and the savings versus the full service mortuaries is significant.
