With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carolyn Stone Leaman of Vero Beach, Florida. She departed this world suddenly on March 21, 2023, at age 87. Carolyn lived life with an unparalleled spirit and strength that inspired all who knew her.
Carolyn was born in Springfield, Ohio, to Robert and Phyllis Stone on October 24, 1935. She grew up with her two siblings, Tom and Kathy. She attended Fairmont High School, where she fostered a love of reading. After graduation, she worked many years in Dayton, Ohio’s tool and die manufacturing industry. Later, Carolyn attended Wright State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work.
In 1972, Carolyn married John Leaman, who predeceased her in 2021. They spent 48 beautiful years together, with the last 25 in Vero Beach at Ocean Resorts Co-op, and most recently at Indian River Estates (IRE). Carolyn and John shared a deep love for each other and enjoyed spending time together, especially during their retirement years.
Carolyn also had a passion for gardening which she put to good use by designing and developing a “Resident’s Flower Garden” at IRE. In addition to gardening, Carolyn was a talented athlete. She was an avid golfer and tennis player and picked up pickleball and water volleyball over the last few years. Carolyn’s competitive spirit and love of sports were evident to all who knew her, and she was always up for a good game or a friendly competition.
Carolyn has a loving family who will miss her dearly. She is survived by her children LaRae Leaman and her partner, Harry Frisby; Donald Leaman; Bruce Leaman and his wife Sharon and their four children: Daniel, Emilee, Kathryn, and Nathan. Her sister, Kathy Stone, also survives her. Preceded in death was Carolyn’s brother Tom, who lost his life in 1969 while serving in Viet Nam. Carolyn will be missed by her beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
The family would like to thank the residents and staff at Indian River Estates for providing a loving community for both Carolyn and John. Memorial contributions can be made to H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue in Carolyn and John’s names.
