George Mark Levitt of Indian River Shores, Florida passed away peacefully on March 20, 2023. He was 80 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on July 21, 1942, George was a graduate of Syracuse University. He began his nearly 50-year professional career in the Motion Picture industry first as a salesman for Columbia Pictures, then a branch manager for National General Pictures, and finally a Senior Vice-President of Film for National Amusements, overseeing all of their domestic theatres. George retired in 2015 after 42 years with the company.
While George was known for being very tough in business, he was also a very kind and giving person, highly respected and well regarded by his colleagues and competitors, many of whom became lifelong friends. In 2000, George was honored to receive the inaugural Al Shapiro Distinguished Service Award, given in recognition of someone who represents the industry’s exceptional ideals and standards. In 2013, Variety the Children’s Charity of New York presented him with the You’ve Gotta Have Heart Award, and in 2015, George was recognized with CinemaCon’s prestigious Triumph Award, saluting his long and laudable career.
George loved boating, fishing and travel, and was thrilled to catch a 325 lb. Blue Marlin on his 70th birthday. He enjoyed keeping up with movies and the business, staying in touch with friends, and relaxing at home with his wife and two dogs, Stella and Trumpers.
He is survived by his wife, Tricia, his brother, Barry and sister-in-law, Sandy, children, Jason, Brian and Mallory, grandchildren, Jacob, Alex and Andrew, nephew Stephen and niece Ronnie.
George did not want a memorial service. Instead, he asked that if someone wanted to honor his memory, he would prefer that they consider making a donation to the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation at www.wrpioneers.org.
