Dylan Kyle Van der Laan 1998-2021.
To all of our friends, family, and Community of Vero Beach. Hugo, Lise Ann, Madelief, Easton and I would like to express our gratitude and love for everyone that has rallied around us during this difficult time. The love that has been sent our way is felt in our hearts and gives us strength. Dylan had recently developed bi polar disorder. His death may be labeled a suicide, but it was this terrible disease that ultimately took his life.
Dylan was one of the brightest stars in the sky. His humor, quick wit, and huge heart shined bright to everyone he encountered. He never met a stranger, always ready to help and serve others. He was never without a joke, a smile, and the warmest hugs anyone could ever imagine.
A huge hole has been created in our lives. This hole is a byproduct of the stigma of mental illness. If this can change and the focus turns to mental health rather then mental illness, others can be saved, and families hearts can remain whole.
There is always someone willing to listen and ready to help. A local nonprofit, Mental Health Association in Indian River County, operates a Walk-In & Counseling Center where children and adults in crisis can walk-in, without an appointment for immediate mental health screenings and intervention free of charge.
It’s okay to reach out. It’s OKAY to Get Help!
Our caring professionals are here to assist you and your family during this difficult time. We are available 24 hours, 7 days a week to assist in immediate arrangements or pre-arrangements.

I met Dylan at Temple University during our freshman year where we lived in adjoining dorm rooms. We’d talk about music mostly, but he could make a discussion out of anything. One night we were up until 5 am because the conversation never stopped. My first year of college was made better by his presence, he will be dearly missed. My sincere condolences to his loved ones.

I’m so so sad to learn that Dylan has passed. We met at a meetup group about tiny houses in 2017 and became friends thanks to our shared interests in architecture and art. Every time we hung out I ended up both laughing and learning something new, and I was always excited to see his creative building projects. My heart goes out to his loved ones. I was hoping to see more of his innovative constructions and was so shocked and saddened to instead learn about this untimely tragedy.
