Julie Anne Shelquist, 81, was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. She left our world too early on June 16th, 2021.
June 16th was both her 59th wedding anniversary and her brother’s birthday, which she would have celebrated with a Hip-Hip Hooray! She often spoke of her brother, Tim’s, 15th birthday, as he was so excited to park cars for her wedding day, despite not being properly licensed.
Julie’s husband, Larry, always by her side since college. Larry remained by her side on their 59th wedding anniversary, as she peacefully left us. Most certainly, she would have rather been shopping.
Julie was born April 5, 1940, in Flint, MI to parents Max and MJ. She was the first-born child, followed by brothers Mike (Mary Anne) and Tim (Gail). Julie and Larry first met during the summer of 1953, just before starting the 8th grade. Julie attended Lake Erie College for Women or Lake College for Eerie Women, as she would jokingly call it. Julie lived throughout Ohio and was an avid Ohio State fan. She and Larry relocated to Tequesta, Florida in 1978 raising her favorite son, Jeff, and favorite daughter, Lori (Joe). Julie was always active in the kids’ sports, even coaching, when necessary. Julie never missed a game. She was the first to try new adventures and encouraged the same, like getting Jeff and Lori in the ocean for the first time. Even if it ended with Julie covered in sand, missing her top and sunglasses. She was always encouraging.
Julie often took in additional kids (which Larry did not always know about) and raised them as her own. Bradley was a favorite who can attest to that. Not known for her organic food choices, Diet Coke and a Big Mac were always a favorite. Julie and Larry remained in Tequesta until their retirement in 2000 from Pratt & Whitney, when they moved north to Vero Beach. They were the first people to move into the newly developed Pointe West Community. They purchased their home on the golf course for Larry, but it did not go unnoticed that the Outlet mall was minutes away.
During retirement Julie became a Sapphire Life Master in bridge and assisted many others along the way. She met many special people through bridge, both at the Vero Beach Bridge Center and online on BBO. Among them are Janet, Gini, and Ken, who recently passed.
Julie’s bottomless Christmas bags will certainly be missed by her favorite grandchildren, Max (Morgan) and Maddie. She also leaves behind special nieces (Little Julie and Christina), a nephew (Greg) and many other friends and family. We will all miss Julie and her candid input, caring soul, and family reminiscing.
A private family gathering will be held, where we will share life’s funny stories, reminisce, and celebrate Julie.

Larry and family,
So sorry to hear of your loss. Even though distance and lack of communication separated us, Julie was one of my best friends. I will always remember the good times we had in Galion. I hope your memories will fill your heart and help to ease your sorrow. My condolences to you and your family.

Dear Larry and Family,
Our deepest sympathy. Words can’t express how saddened we are for your loss. I so enjoyed getting to know Julie as she’d go for her daily walks around the neighborhood. You are such a special couple, having spent a lifetime together, supporting each other every step of the way. I thought it so cute that you two were walking the neighborhood hand in hand like newlyweds, you were providing a crutch for Julie until you trusted her to venture out on her own as she recuperated from her leg break. . I’d walk with her, as she wouldn’t stop to chat….she told me you knew how long her route would take and would come looking for her if she were a minute late! How devoted! She also told me how amazing you were taking on the likes of grocery shopping and all. Julie will be missed, and may God comfort you and give you strength during this difficult time. May Julie’s memory be eternal.
