Mary Stauffer Anderson was born on October 19, 1923 in Sandusky, OH. At 96, she left a son, a daughter, five grandsons and eight great-grandchildren. She also outlived five interesting and pleasant husbands. As a practical nurse, she travelled internationally in the cruise industry, served as a home care provider, and volunteered in Hospice and the Red Cross. Mary delighted her grandchildren with postcards from around the world, and at home, made cookies for them to decorate at Christmas holidays. She loved to joke, fish and play cards and can now join her beloved Airedale dogs and all her Dutch, Irish and German ancestors to let the good times roll into infinity.

My grandfather, James McGookey, was the oldest of a very large family. He passed away when I was 1 … but as I grew up, I knew one of his siblings VERY well. Aunt Gladys — whose daughter’s obituary appears above — was a force of nature! Though she lived in Upstate New York, she would come to our tiny village in Ohio to visit, and her visits were always fun. I remember her vividly. She was the sort of person I wanted to be, when I grew up. A few years ago I decided to organize a reunion of all the descendants of that very large family. I was delighted when I learned that three of Aunt Gladys’s grandchildren would join us! Mary Stauffer Anderson’s daughter Melanie showed up … and I was just delighted with her. Though I knew of her mother (again, the woman whose obituary appears here), I couldn’t remember meeting her in person. But Melanie was the sweet, smart, fast-thinking incarnation of her grandmother, and I am so grateful for Mary Stauffer Anderson having raised such a wonderful girl! As I look at her lovely portrait, I think I see some of my own bone structure and a full face that matches my own right down to that lower lip. Rest in peace, Mary Stauffer Anderson. You’ve made a lovely difference in the world.
