Helen Tonning, 87, passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at home in Vero Beach, with her daughter at her side.
She was born in New York City, to George and Stella Galanis who immigrated from Samos, Greece and settled in the (then) predominately Greek neighborhood of Washington Heights in upper Manhattan. She continued to reside in New York City for most of her life, moving to Vero Beach in 2017 to be closer to her youngest daughter, Kerry.
Helen’s 40 year career at WNBC-NY included positions at WNBC-Radio and WNBC-TV in sales, service and traffic as well as standards and practices, leading to her position as Manager, TV Spot Sales Service.
She was an avid reader and liked to cook. She enjoyed hosting her open house parties on the holidays as she loved to entertain, always relishing in the company of family, friends and laughter over good food and a dry martini.
Helen is predeceased by her parents, George and Stella Galanis, sister Mary Nielsen and brother Constantine Galanis.
She is survived by her daughter Karla Grimaldi and her husband Alfred, daughter Kerry Tonning; niece Christina Galanis, nephew James Galanis and his wife Sandy and extended family and friends.
