Alvaro Augusto Contreras Betancur, 75 of Vero Beach Fl, passed away April 5, 2020 at his home.
He was born March 29, 1945 in Cúcuta, Colombia but he lived in Medellin, Colombia for most of his life. He was a resident of Vero Beach for 5 years, after living in Fairfield, Ct for 15 years.
He worked for 30 years for Fabricato as a industrial engineer where he retired, and where he held the “friendliest coworker” award multiple years in a row.
He was son the of Dr. Marco Tulio Contreras and Amelia Betancur, and he was predeceased by his brothers Hernan, Carlos, and Gabriel Contreras. He is remembered by all his sisters and brothers, Amelia, Maria Elena, Marybel, Rafael, Jorge, Tulio, Guillermo, and Hermes.
In his early twenties, he was married to Maria Eugenia Vazquez who has stayed a long life friend and with whom he had his first 2 sons, Alejandro Contreras and still born baby Jesus.
After some years he met the love of his life, Gilma Canas, whom he shared 46 years of love, dancing, and growing. They had 3 children, Paola, Alvaro Jr, and Carolina.
His greatest pride and happiness were all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was known as “Abuelo, Papito, Ito, and Lelo” by his grandchildren Stephanie, Tatiana, Amelia, Vanessa, Alejandro, Juan Pablo, Ariel, Miranda, Esperanza, and great grandchildren Sofia and Samara.
His legacy of love, happiness, and joy of life will be carried on by all of those whose life he touched through his humor, love for music and favorite soccer team Deportivo Independiente Medellín, as he used to say “Viva el Dim el Poderoso!”

El tío que dejó huella en todos sus sobrinos, el más cariñoso y amoroso.
Siempre te llevaré en mi corazón recordando tantas veces que nos molestamos con nuestros equipos (Medellín- Nacional) .Pero siempre con una sonrisa….. con cariño, con el fin de tener un rato agradable, con respeto.
Descansa ahora, al lado de mi padre que no se llevan siquiera 8 meses, y que al fin del camino nos encontraremos de nuevo.
