Robert Gay Mefford

Robert Gay Mefford, 75 of Vero Beach, FL passed away on December 7, 2024 in Vero Beach.

Robert was born in Winchester, KY on May 11, 1949, to the late Robert Simms Mefford (WWII Marine) and Dorothy (Brock) Mefford.

Robert played college football defense at Virginia Tech. He received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in Administration.

Mr. Mefford served as SGT/E-5 in the US Army during Vietnam War. He was a trained Army Ranger and Sniper but was ordered to support JAG during the Vietnam Mili massacre trials. He worked as a court reporter for JAG in Germany and Vietnam. During his years of service, Mr. Mefford was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Mechanics Badge, Expert Rife (M-16).  Following his military career, he worked many years in Human Resources for JW Marriott.

Robert enjoyed playing golf and enjoyed ballroom dancing. He was a volunteer coach for the children’s Special Olympics for several years. He also volunteered with his wife during Ron DeSantis Governor Campaign.

Survivors include his loving wife, Marilyn Winter Alghussein Mefford;  two sons, Geoffrey (Heidi) Mefford (USAF Retired) and David Mefford; one daughter, Jessica (Brett) Shollar; stepchildren, Sophia (Jim) Owen, Basama Houton and Jason Paul Alghussein; three brothers, Thomas (Margaret) Mefford, Clarence (Monica) Mefford and John (Susan) Mefford; two granddaughters, Brittney (Artigues) Morris (US Army Active Duty) and Aria Jade Shollar; one grandson, Brandon Mefford (USAF Active Duty); two great granddaughters, Madeline and Sophia Artigues.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Simms Mefford (WWII Marine) and Dorothy (Brock) Mefford; and sister, Barbara Mefford.

An inurnment will be held at South Florida National Cemetery with military honors.
