Katherine Frame/Jones was born in the spring of ’41 in Philadelphia, PA into a world that was at war with itself. Her missionary parents, Rev. Raymond Frame and Helen Nowack/Frame had themselves returned stateside just a few years earlier due to Japanese aggressions in China that provoked the “China Inland Mission” (Founded by Hudson Taylor) to recall all their people deployed to that country.
It was during these war years stateside that Katherine was conceived followed by a little brother in ’44, Ray, Jr.
The now family of 4 returned to China in late 1945, where Katherine began her school years learning Mandarin and Hanzi. The writing of the Chinese characters making up the Chinese language, alongside English taught by British teachers.
Then, in 1949, the Communists reached Shanghai where Katherine’s father was head of the Missions language school there.
The salvation message wasn’t appreciated by the communists and as a result General Mao Tse Tung arranged for the “mostly” civil expulsion of all non-nationals from the country. (Read the book, “China: The Reluctant Exodus” by Phyllis Thompson for more on this amazing true story)
Leaving the world she knew best behind the family evacuated to Hong Kong, a British territory. Katherine was 8 years old. Katherine’s father, Raymond Frame, received a request in 1950 to serve the Chinese who themselves escaped the Communist takeover of China by evacuating to the Philippines. It was in Manila where her father began the work of setting up a Bible Collage known today as the Biblical Seminary of the Philippines (BSOP).
Katherine and her family returned to the States in 1953 on furlough from the Mission work in the Philippines for a period of 4 years or so where her and her brother attended school in the States for the first time.
Before returning to the Philippines, Katherine’s parents set her and her younger brother Ray up in a boarding home for missionary kids in Wheaton, IL. There Katherine continued her studies and took up nursing as well before meeting the man who would become her husband, Albin Burritt.
She married and had two children by him, Steven and Sandra Burritt.
Katherine acquired a number of skills during her life, which she enjoyed practicing including knitting, crocheting, sewing, pattern making as well as being a wonderful cook. During her life one of her favorite ways to put a smile on a child’s face was to make Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that were personalized to the child. She had made many dozens of these dolls over the course of her life. She was gifted a beautiful voice and loved singing in church and the church choir. Later in life she discovered that she also enjoyed fishing.
Katherine is survived by her brother Raymond Frame Jr. and grandson Jozeph Burritt; and her sons Steven Burritt and Keith Shaffer. Katherine currently resides in heaven with her Savior Jesus Christ and her family that went before her. Shalom!
