Janice E. (Slater) Seals, age 76, joined her Savior Jesus in the Heavenly Garden on April 2, 2024 (she is likely telling jokes & teaching yoga there now).
Jan passed peacefully, surrounded by family, under the care of VNA Hospice at Cleveland Clinic/IR Hospital in Vero Beach FL.
Jan was born on August 30, 1947, in Long Beach, Calif. The family moved to Brevard County, FL in 1954, for her father’s administrative position in the space program. They moved back to Calif. for 3 years from 1959 -1962, & finally/permanently returned to FL in 1962.
Jan was on the swim team at Cocoa High School (now Rockledge High). She met her husband-to-be in French class. They married on Nov. 13, 1965. Jan worked at Sears in her 20’s. She was also asked to be a “Charm” school/etiquette teacher to groups of young ladies. Jan was in charge of informal fashion shows at Sears too.
Jan later worked for 10+ years at Kennedy Space Center. Subsequently, her most unusual job was transport by plane — of women prisoners — out of Titusville. After that, she discovered a very meaningful job in Titusville, as Activities Director at a Rehab/Nursing Home….for 3 years. Jan had such compassion in this area, that she later ended up providing private home & companion care for several older couples & some individual clients as well. They all became very dear to her. Throughout many of those years and beyond, she was a yoga instructor (40+ years). This was her lifelong passion.
Jan had an amazing green thumb & an incredible knowledge of plants & flowers. What a beautiful yard she nurtured! She loved the beach & travelling. Jan was an animal lover, and even had an unusual pet when she was a teen — a squirrel named Walter. She had a special affinity & connection with horses & birds….which made them naturally drawn to her. She had many dogs in her life, and Jan always had a cat. She was a big advocate of manatees, which she would often see in the river, close to her house in Rockledge. Butterflies had a spiritual significance to Jan; there was a similar feeling regarding hummingbirds.
Jan lived in Rockledge until May 2022, when she then moved to Vero Beach, FL, to live with her daughter & son-in-law. Jan had some enjoyable times with new friends she met in the neighborhood community in Vero. Also while living in Vero, she consistently stayed in touch with the myriad of precious friends she had made throughout her life in the Rockledge area, including a connection to her church family at Rockledge Presbyterian.
Jan is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Tim) McDonald; sister, Judy (Ray) Brown; and brother, Rev. Canon Scott (Becky) Slater; grandchildren, Erin (Brandon) Mead, Hailey Murgia, and Shae (Bayley) McHill; great-grandchildren, Colton, Amelia, Rowan, and Joshua. Also surviving Jan are her five nephews: Nico, Cam, Eric, Reid and Ben.
Jan recently added two cousins to her family, who were discovered through Ancestry.com (Tony and Kaelyn). She was thrilled to meet Tony in Sep. 2022!
Jan is predeceased by her Chrisman & Slater grandparents; dad, Gerald Slater; mother, Phyllis Slater; son, Randall Seals; grandson, Saige Seals; and ex-husband, Dwight Seals.
Jan’s family would like to thank all the caring people at the local hospital, and those with Vero Hospice organization for their compassion and kind assistance. We also appreciate the same from “Care at Home,” from whom she received care for 5 days at home, prior to hospitalization.
Jan will be deeply missed but will live on through all who knew & loved her.
Jan loved volunteering for various projects at her church & serving in whatever capacity she could (i.e., nursery). Her church, Rockledge Presbyterian, at 921 Rockledge Drive, was always there for her; any donations can be made in Jan’s memory — to Rockledge Presbyterian Church.
Our caring professionals are here to assist you and your family during this difficult time. We are available 24 hours, 7 days a week to assist in immediate arrangements or pre-arrangements.

Thanks so much for your thoughts, Lou Ann. When I saw Phyllis & Sharon at my mom’s Celebration service, I remembered you also. My mom loved her time spent with the Cocoa/Rockledge Women’s League. She often spoke to me over the years –about those monthly meetings & all the wonderful women she had met, with whom she had developed friendships. Through my mom, I will always think of you ladies with fondness & thankfulness. Sincerely~ Jan’s daughter, Michelle
